“How to stay sane during
the craziest time of the year”

The holiday is upon us,
and undoubtedly the pressure of what should I buy and who can I
eliminate off of my list, without any harsh feelings is taking its toll
on all of us. We live in a “pressure to buy everything in-sight
society”. And if for any reason that’s not enough, we now have pop-ups
on our computers to remind us, in case we haven’t given into the
Christmas spirit. Like you, I have done the usual Christmas list “ only
for the kids this year list” and the “immediate family only list”, and
of course the “I’m not buying for anyone this year list.” All of these
at one time or another seemed to work reasonably well, until after
thanksgiving day. After thanksgiving day gives everyone and their uncle
permission to bombard us with “ you better be shopping or you might as
well celebrate another holiday” syndrome. To help you self medicate,
I’ve come up with three steps that will keep you sane during the
craziest holiday season of the year.
Three steps to keep you sane during the craziest time of the year!
1. Know what you’re up to: Decide how you want to experience this
holiday. Don’t let tradition, the media, bad fruitcake, determine how
you feel this holiday. Decide whether its going to be a “visit everyone
I haven’t seen in a long time “ kind of holiday, or “spend it with
people you feel very connected to” holiday. Whatever it is - you choose!
2. Tell others about your plans: Once you’ve decided how you’re going to
experience Christmas this year, articulate it to your friends and
family. Let them in on it, so they’re not caught by surprise. You would
be amazed at what a mental shift that can be for many people - that they
can actually experience the holidays however they choose.
3. Keep Choosing: In this case Keep Choosing simply means, Physically
putting your self in an environment that supports you. It is not enough
to say you desire intimacy, act on it !
It also means to continuously go with- in this holiday. Ask yourself
three important questions:
• How do I feel?
• Do I want to do this?
• Will this create the experience I desire?
Keep Choosing Tools
If you find yourself going against everything you said you wouldn’t do,
take a moment, breath and remind yourself with an affirmation, “ I am
choosing to have an enjoyable holiday season”.
And remember to keep choosing!
